Dog Obedience Training
The doctors and staff at the Knoxville Veterinary Clinic are very excited to announce that we are now offering a beginner dog obedience course
The development of this obedience course has been a long time goal of our clinic after listening to many discouraged clients complaining about the lack of availability for obedience courses in this area. For us, it was frustrating to see disgruntled owners unable to fix their dog’s obedience concerns on their own at home, yet unable to travel to out-of-town obedience courses.
A disturbing statistic is that on average in the United States only 30% of puppies will remain in their original homes by the age of 2 years. One of the biggest reasons for this is unresolved behavior or obedience problems. We here at the Knoxville Veterinary Clinic would like to make it our mission to help owners maintain a life-long bond with their dogs.
This course is designed to help teach your dog basic commands and socialization skills.
Dogs of all ages are welcome to enroll in this course, however we will spend time discussing puppy training issues, such as potty training, chewing, and play aggression.
The course will be instructed by our Certified Veterinary Technician, Donna Flattery, who has completed her certification as a Dog Obedience Trainer through Penn Foster.
In addition to her obedience training, Donna has had 30 years of experience working with animals as a Certified Veterinary Technician and has taken her own dogs through the courses to become certified pet therapy dogs. Also, she has had the privilege of assisting all three of her children while they trained dogs through the 4-H dog obedience classes in Knoxville.
This course will run for six weeks and will be held at the Knoxville Veterinary Clinic. Class sizes are limited to 10 dogs per class and enrollment is based on a first come basis.
You can sign up at our clinic or you can download the Beginner Dog Obedience Class Registration form and send it to us by mail or fax (641-842-2524).
The cost to enroll your dog is $75.00 (non-refundable), due when you sign your dog up for the course.
Classes will begin at 6pm every Thursday night and will last for an hour. Please call us to find out when our next opening is available.
We do require that your dog is up to date on its Distemper-Parvo, Bordatella, and Rabies vaccinations befor the first obedience class. If your dog is less than 16 weeks old, it does not need to have had a Rabies vaccination, but must be up to date on its Distemper-Parvo and Bordatella vaccinations. Also, we require that all dogs enrolled in the course are free of both internal and external parasites. This means they are required to have a fecal done within the last 6 months that shows they are free of intestinal parasites. Please bring your veterinary documents with you to the first meeting.
You will not need to bring your dog with you to the first meeting as this is an introductory meeting that will focus on goal setting and leadership training.
At the first meeting, you will be given a training packet along with several important handouts. It is important to understand that you will be expected to work with your dog for a minimum of 10 minutes per day 5 days a week while enrolled in this obedience course. Our objective for this course is to help you develop and maintain a good working relationship with your dog. We are here to help you!
